Frequently Asked Questions
Visitor Services
ARLIS is open to the public, as well as to members of its Founding agencies.
ARLIS provides reference services virtually via phone and email, as well as in-person by appointment. Computer access to ARLIS databases and journals is available from 8-5, Monday-Friday. These are the same databases and journals offered to Founders. Many publicly accessible resources are available freely from the on-site public computer using the Resources page on the ARLIS website.
Most books, reports and other materials are available to be checked out for four weeks with one four-week renewal.
ARLIS honors library cards from other libraries that participate in the Alaska Library Catalog. ARLIS library cards are available for those who do not have an active card with participating libraries. ARLIS library cards are available upon approval of a written application. Photo identification is required.
Books may be renewed online, using your library card account and personal identification number, or by calling the ARLIS reference desk at 907-786-7651.
ARLIS has recently stopped assessing overdue fines on circulating material. Materials which are overdue more than 28 days are assumed to be lost and a $75 fee will be assessed. Please return or renew your items by the due date to avoid any lost item fees.
For Founders: if ARLIS has sent you a book from a different Alaska library or an interlibrary loan, those items may still accrue overdue fees depending on the policies of the owning library. Please renew or return your items by the due date to avoid any overdue fines.
Parking
Free parking is available to ARLIS library users by using ARLIS parking passes available by contacting ARLIS reference. Free parking is also available without a pass after 7:30pm Monday-Thursday and all day Friday-Sunday. ARLIS regrets that, due to UAA parking policies, we cannot provide parking passes for UAA students, staff, or faculty.
Parking passes may be used on any level of the Central Parking Garage located off Alumni Loop, on any level of the East Parking Garage near the Integrated Science Building and in the parking lot next to the library building.
For those eligible for disability parking, handicap spaces are available on the first and third levels of the Central Parking Garage and outside the Central Parking Garage, next to the Social Sciences Building in the East Campus Central Lot, and at the North entrance of the library building. ARLIS parking passes are required.
Contact your agency librarian or call the ARLIS reference desk at 907-786-7651.
Founder Services
ARLIS was created by merging the staff and collections of eight Anchorage natural resources agency libraries. Agencies may become founding agencies by making a commitment for on-going support of ARLIS at a significant level. Founding agencies have representation on the ARLIS Founders Board that governs the library.
Founding partners are:
You are eligible for Founder access to the ARLIS website if you are employed with one of the Alaska-based agencies that provide funding support for ARLIS. Occasionally, an agency makes a request to grant Founder services to a volunteer, intern or contractee.
If you work for a Founding Agency, but have not yet registered click here to activate the online registration form. ARLIS staff will process your request, and you will be notified by email when your login is available for use.
While the ARLIS collection is available for use by the general public, Founders pay for and receive additional services. These include desktop services from any computer, daily courier delivery of requested items, expert assistance with research and interlibrary loans, document delivery, free parking via parking code, and digitizing services upon request.
Yes. In 1997, ARLIS was founded through a Memorandum of Understanding among partner agencies, known as Founders. A Founder share for ARLIS includes a seat at the Founders Board. Contributors receive negotiated services via a service contract and annual billing. Interested parties should email the ARLIS reference desk, reference@arlis.org. A Management Team representative will contact you to discuss the benefits, costs, and details.
