Description
Summary:Investigations of sheet-rill erosion in a permafrost-free subarctic setting indicated that stripping all vegetation from the soil surface increased rainfall erosion 16 times over that produced in an undistrubed forest. Pressures on central Alaska's forest resources prompted this research. A study site was conducted on the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed located 30 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Three plots were on a permafrost-free upland site, and two plots were on a permafrost-dominated slope. The plot sizes ranged from 450 to 2250 square feet.
