Description
Summary:This study plan outlines the goals, objectives, and methods for characterizing adult salmon habitat utilization in the Susitna River in order to provide data to evaluate potential Project-related effects to fish habitat. Objectives include: (1) capture, radiotag, and track adults from five species of Pacific salmon in the middle Susitna River in proportion to their abundance; (2) determine the migration behavior and spawning locations of radiotagged fish in the lower, middle, and upper Susitna River; (3) assess the feasibility of using sonar to determine spawning locations in turbid water; (4) characterize salmon migration behavior and timing above Devils Canyon; (5) compare historical and current data on relative abundance, locations of spawning and holding salmon, and use of mainstem, side-channel, slough, and tributary habitat types by adult salmon; (6) locate individual holding and spawning salmon in clear and turbid water and collect habitat data from holding and spawning salmon in the middle and lower river mainstem consistent with developing habitat suitability criteria for instream flow modeling; (7) evaluate the effectiveness of methods used in 2012 to address study goals and objectives, and assess their suitability for future years' studies.
