Borrowing taxidermy items: This collection is available by reservation only. Please call 27-ARLIS or e-mail reference@arlis.org 1-5 days in advance to select items. Please make a pre-arranged appointment to check items out and to return items. Due to staffing constraints, ARLIS can no longer provide same-day service but we are happy to help with making these available to users.
ARLIS - Furs, Skulls, Birds and Fish Mounts
Furs, Skulls, Bird Mounts & Fish Mounts are made available at ARLIS by the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, U.S. Fish & wildlife Service, and private donors. Most items may be checked out from ARLIS for a 2-week period and may be renewed once for an additional two weeks. An inventory is available for download.
Also available for download is a 34-page guide for the circulating bird and fish mounts. For each specimen, the guide includes a photograph, including a ruler to show the size of the specimen, and the size of the box in which the specimen is circulated.
These items are available on a first-come/first-served basis. Please check the catalog for availability by doing a keyword search using the name of the animal or bird exactly as it appears in the list. If the search produces too many hits, add keyword “realia”.
Furs, mounts and skulls may be borrowed and returned Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 10 a.m. until 4:45 PM.
Teachers
ARLIS resources available for loan to educators include the following collections.
Environmental Education Curriculum Collection
More than 500 books, selected for K-12 educators. Items in this collection circulate to anyone with a valid library card from Anchorage Public Library, UAA/APU, or ARLIS. Alaska reciprocal library privileges are supported via Consortium Library. Items in this collection are also available by interlibrary loan.
To browse the Environmental Education collection from the ARLIS catalog, search on “ENV ED.” That should produce these results.
Science Kits
Science Kits are made available by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Kits may be checked out from ARLIS for a 2-week period.
Materials may be renewed once. Kits are available on a firstcome/first-served basis; please check the ARLIS catalog for availability. Contents vary; kits may include activities, books, posters, videos, etc.
