Peromyscus keeni (Rhoads, 1894)
The taxonomy of northwestern deer mice is complex. Wilson and Reeder (1993) list Peromyscus maniculatus and P. sitkensis as the two deer mice occurring in southeast Alaska. These species have both been shown (Hogan et al., 1993) to belong to the same species sometimes referred to as the forest deer mouse, P. oreas. But, in synonomizing several island subspecies, the name keeni is found to have priority over oreas.
P. maniculatus has been accidentally introduced to Shemya Island in the Aleutians, and the northern form, P. m. borealis, occurs near interior Alaska in Yukon Territory.
