Summary: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is preparing a document, "Final programmatic environmental impact statement vegetation treatments using herbicides on Bureau of Land Management lands in 17 western states," (PEIS) to evaluate proposed vegetation treatment methods and alternatives on public lands managed by the BLM in the western U.S. including Alaska. As part of the PEIS, a human health risk assessment (HHRA) was conducted to evaluate potential human health and environmental risks that may result from exposure to herbicide active ingredients both during and after treatment of public lands. The HHRA has evaluated the six herbicide ingredients (Dicamba, Diflufenzopyr, Diquat, Fluridone, Imazapic, and Sulfometuron methyl) in regards to risks to humans. (Other active ingredients considered in the PEIS had already been quantitatively evaluated in previous BLM impact statements or by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.)
