Oil Spill Links

The Oil Spill Public Information Center collection is housed at the Alaska Resources Library and Information Services and is included in the ARLIS catalog.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council - This is an excellent web site containing detailed information on the environmental impact of the spill, the restoration activities, and the recovery status of injured species and resources. It contains a bibliography of journal articles on Trustee Council funded research, a list of final and annual reports on damage assessment and restoration projects, and photographs. A question and answer section is designed for students and teachers.

Alaska SeaLife Center - This marine science facility combines research, wildlife rehabilitation and public education. Some of the research projects conducted at the center are funded by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council and are described on the web site.

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company services the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and the Valdez terminal. This site provides information about the company and its spill prevention efforts. Photographs are included.

American Petroleum Institute - This web site contains a section about preventing and responding to oil spills and includes photographs and a discussion of the physical properties of oil. It also contains many links to related sites.

Event Based Science Institute - Event Based Science is a curriculum developed through the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. One of the science units is called Oil Spill! and is available for purchase at this site or may be borrowed from ARLIS. This web page contains a description of the kit and links to related and helpful sites.

Hard Aground - This web site is an Anchorage Daily News Retrospective on the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. It contains the full text of articles from the Anchorage Daily News on the spill, divided into 8 categories. It also contains maps, photographs, and links to many other oil spill related web sites.

NOAA's Office of Response and Resoration web site contains detailed information on their spill response program. It also contains a section on oil spills for students and teachers.

Newton's Apple, Episode 1005 focuses on oil spills. There is also a teacher's guide associated with this video that includes vocabulary, resources, and experiments.

Oil Spill Recovery Institute (OSRI) - This site provides information on the OSRI which was created by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. It contains information about and images of the research conducted at the Prince William Sound Science Center.

Photovault - This web site contains of oil spills and other disasters, which are available for use for a fee.

Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council (PWSRCAC), an industry watchdog group, was created by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. This site contains summaries of technical reports on oil spill cleanup methods and prevention measures.

Prince William Sound: Paradise Lost? The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill - This site is the work of college student Jeff Kelly. Although he admits to a bias against Alyeska, he has tried to present objective information on the Exxon Valdez oil spill and subsequent cleanup and restoration activities. Unique to this site is information on litigation. Also included are National Response Team documents, the text of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, and links to other spill related sites.

Ship Escort Response Vessel System (SERVS), maintained by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, describes the SERVS system and spill prevention and response. It contains photographs.

Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research - This web site includes information on the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled birds and a page designed for children.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - The U.S. Environment Protection Agency has an Emergency Management website that contains information about programs that help ensure facilities and organizations take steps to prevent oil spills. Do a keyword search to find information on the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the Oil Pollution Act of 1990.

U.S. National Response Team - The section on publications contains full text fact sheets on in situ burning of spilled oil.
