U-M Medical Plans for 2007
At the end of this year, the Blue Cross Blue Shield/United traditional plan will be eliminated from our spectrum of medical plans. The University remains committed to offering a choice of high-quality, comprehensive plans. Therefore, during Open Enrollment (October 9-20, 2006), benefits-eligible faculty and staff can continue to choose from among M-CARE HMO, Care Choices HMO, Health Alliance Plan, Comprehensive Major Medical, M-CARE POS, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, and M-CARE PPO PLUS. (GradCare continues to be available for eligible graduate
students.)

Benefits AnswerLine Discontinued July 1
The Benefits AnswerLine for recorded benefits information and forms by fax will be discontinued as of July 1, 2006. The decision to end the service was made by Benefits Office Administration due to declining use. The creation of the HR/Payroll Service Center, an increase in use of the Benefits Office Web site for forms and information, and the growth of online enrollment through eBenefits also led to the decision to end the program.
Medicare Part D (updated May 16, 2006)
In early 2006 Medicare began offering outpatient prescription drug coverage called Medicare Part D. After careful review of the new Medicare Part D Plan, the University of Michigan strongly urges Medicare-eligible active employees (and their dependents enrolled in the U-M plan) NOT to enroll in Medicare Part D plan. You do not have to do anything in order to retain your current prescription drug coverage in the University of Michigan plan.

Same-Sex Domestic Partner Benefits
A message from Laurita Thomas, Associate Vice President & Chief Human Resource Officer, December 17, 2004
The passage of Proposal 2 in the State of Michigan has resulted in considerable concern from faculty, staff and students about its potential impact on our ability to continue to offer health care and other benefits to the same-sex domestic partners of U-M employees. The proposal has resulted in an amendment to our state’s constitution that became effective this week and declares that “a union of one man and one woman shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose.” The debate over this issue is ongoing with steady coverage in the media, and we recognize the strain such scrutiny and uncertainty can place on our LGBT colleagues.

Military
Service Leave
University of Michigan faculty and staff members in the
Armed Forces Reserves or National Guard who are called
to active duty are placed on Military Service Leave. Under
the Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights
Act (USERRA), Military Service Leave is treated the same
as any unpaid leave of absence.
