Mission Statement:

Alaska Resources Library and Information Services provides universal access to natural and cultural resources information. The library staff and ARLIS's federal, state, university, and future partners recognize that improved understanding of Alaska's resources facilitates wise development, conservation and management. ARLIS serves the diverse information needs of its customers in an unbiased and effective manner.

The natural and cultural resources collection at ARLIS consists of:

  • More then 200,000 books
  • 700 journals
  • Electronic databases
  • Legal materials
  • Federal and state documents
  • Agency documents
  • Maps and atlases
  • Conference proceedings
  • Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations
  • Videos, slides, and photos
  • Furs, skulls, and bird mounts
  • Educational science kits
  • Environmental education materials
Services

The library is staffed Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Reference
  • Skilled librarians available to assist you at all times
  • Telephone reference service for quick information
  • Access to the Internet
  • Reference e-mail reference@arlis.org
  • Access to CD-ROM and on-line databases focusing on Alaskan resource issues including:
    • fish and wildlife
    • geology
    • mining
    • oil and gas
    • forestry
    • land use management
    • environmental pollution
    • recreational and scenic resources
    • cultural heritage
    • legal topics
  • Librarians will provide assistance in helping you with research
Services Available to Founders
  • Direct delivery of library materials
  • Document delivery: faxing or mailing photocopies of articles and documents from the ARLIS collection and other sources
  • Interlibrary loan: materials unavailable at ARLIS may be borrowed from other libraries in Alaska or out of state
  • In depth reference: customized research for special needs, written summaries and reports, preparation of bibliographies
Access to the Library Collection
  • Most materials can be checked out
  • Internet access to the library's on-line catalog
  • Materials are available outside of Anchorage through interlibrary loan, please contact your local library
Joint Library Catalog
ARLIS, Anchorage Public Libraries, and the University of Alaska Anchorage libraries share a joint library catalog. A default search will list the call numbers from each library. To search ARLIS only, change the default from "all libraries" to "ARLIS Library."
Electronic Resources
Searchable databases are available to founding agency staff via the ARLIS website. Walk-in patrons may access the following at our public computers. (Click here for founder access)
